More on Sub-Krewes

A sub-krewe is a smaller entity in the Krewe of St. Catherine that has organized under a theme to roll in a cohesive group during the parade. A sub-krewe can include as many or as few people as desired, with a minimum of four people per sub-krewe. Some sub-krewes have contraptions, sound, costumes, signage, and, yet, others do not. This is up to the discretion of the sub-krewe. However, there will be judges along the parade route rating best costumes, performance, and overall sub-krewe.

Sub-krewes self-establish their own rules and guidelines (costume colors/basics, values, throw  themes, etc). Some krewes are kid friendly, some have open membership, and some ask for additional krewe dues to cover expenses for shared resources. If you need help with this, let us know! We are happy to offer suggestions or point you in the direction of resources.

If you have an idea for a sub-krewe /group theme, we welcome your idea whole heartedly. Forming your own sub-krewe is easy. It really comes down to a solid concept that people want to be a part of and a good name.

We ask that sub-krewe names not be solely a business name, but they may incorporate a business name if desired (ex: Choo Choo Krewe, sponsored by Amtrak).

Awards

  • Judges and announcer will be set-up at Pocket Museum Alley to rate sub-krewes. Three awards will be given: best costume, best performance, best overall sub-krewe.

Rules

  • Must be “human-powered” to enter the parade, which means walking with your feet, a stroller, a bike, wheelchair, roller blades, etc.
  • Absolutely no electric or gas-powered vehicles (This includes no golf carts or tractors.)
  • Dogs are welcome if leashed. You must have a designated poop-picker-upper if you have dog in the parade.
  • NO GLASS on the route! Absolutely none! That means no glass throws or bottles! Don’t bring it on the route at all.
  • NO FIRE on the route! This is 100% against city regulations.
  • NO GLITTER or CONFETTI may be thrown

Recommendations

  • Sub-krewes will need to provide their own throws. We highly recommend making your own throws, like magnets, stickers, and bookmarks! Handmade trinkets are highly coveted souvineres.
  • Costumes and or matching outfits are HIGHLY recommended. Keep in mind the parade is at night, so adding lights or glowing elements would have a BIG impact.
